North Beach

For the last couple of weeks I’ve been struggling with this painting. I think I have photographed five compostions altogether and have painted out whole sections. Working from several photographs and sketches, I had more than could be put in one painting. Working from memory and taking liberties with my photos, perspective was a big problem. I must try taking all my gear down to the beach and paint from life. I’m sure my results would be much better.

The flowers in the dunes are beautiful just now and I wanted to be able to show more than just the beach. The dune grasses are stunning with their pale blue softness and delicate lines. They contrast dramatically with harshness of the scrubby bush behind. Getting up close in the foreground I had to work carefully with the layers as I moved back down the beach to keep the perspective in check.
