It is Autumn and painting in my little studio is painfully cold. I’ve spent the last few days painting these little orange gems from life. My grandmothers batik table cloth is a favourite of mine and I thought the blue & white pattern would contrast nicely with the bright orange of the mandarines. Working out how to add dimples shine to the mandarines was a challenge. The composition had me thinking for a couple of days too. In the end I decided that I would just paint the colours I loved and keep it simple. I am surprisingly pleased with the texture of the brushwork and the light in this study. My paintings are generally darker and it was good to change my palette and experiment a bit.
